Week of Oct. 8th

The Best Part...
Making Apple Pie!
Our apple study concluded with a great day of peeling, chopping, adding ingredients, and mixing them together to make our own individual apple pies.  It was a lot of work, but it smelled so good in our room!

It was hard to make the pieces small enough for the pies, but it was good fine motor work to slice using safe plastic knives.  After everyone got a turn at the baking table, we put them in the oven to cook.  We went outside while the pies cooled and were treated to a yummy snack when we came inside.
Have your JK child try this for you at home - yum!

Finding Fall
Fall is in the air, and so we began a discussion about the changes that occur in Fall in nature and in our own activities.  We were most interested in what adaptations animals must make to brave the colder weather and talked about collecting food, adding a thicker coat, hibernating, and migrating.  We each picked an animal we would like to be and headed outside as that animal to collect nuts, seeds, and even warm bedding to add to nests or burrows.  We later began a project to create egg carton hibernating boxes with the forest floor above.  We hope to learn more about these woodland animals on our hike with Mrs. Z next week.
Marla Frazee Visits
We enjoyed the visit from author/illustrator Marla Frazee on Thursday!  We liked having her read some of her books and explain where her ideas came from for the story and pictures.  We especially liked seeing the first book she made with her good friend when she was just in 3rd grade - great inspiration for us to keep writing and drawing about the interesting things that happen in our JK lives.  With the rainy weather, maybe this weekend would be a good time to start a story of our own!  Enjoy!
