Celebrating a 1/2 birthday in JK can be just as much fun as the real day - maybe even more because it is a day that is not always celebrated with birthday hats, Special Helper duties, and yummy treats! Hope you enjoyed the festivities, Holden!
Happy 100th Day!
It's hard to believe, but we have been in JK for 100 days now! Monday was the day to do some 100th Day activities to help us understand the big and tricky number 100. We took our "Days All Done" jar and counted out the 100 jewels to be sure that we were really at day 100. We decorated "I Spy" glasses and collaboratively built a 100 piece "I Spy" puzzle. Each person chose a collected material and counted a set of ten. We added them one set at a time to the "I Spy" puzzle in "time lapse" style until we reached 100 - kind of neat to see the pieces grow to 100. We also made a 100th Day snack by taking 1 piece of licorice and a bagel (cream cheese and party sprinkles, of course) to create the number 10. We discovered that 10 people with 10 made our Special Helper's number 100!
JK and the Wild Animals
In preparation for our Winter Hike, we read Jan Brett's story, Annie and the Wild Animals. In the story, Annie loses her pet cat and is really lonely. She makes corn cakes to set at the edge of the woods to attract a new one. Instead she attracts all sorts of wild, woodland animals! We decided to make corn cakes too and set them by the trail after our hike. We wonder if any of our woodland animals will find them, and we will check back to see.
Fresh snow, bountiful tracks, and milder weather made for a perfect day to take our Winter Hike! Mrs. Ziegelbauer helped us find and identify many tracks along the trail. The deer tracks were particularly interesting because it looked like something was dragging between the sets of hoof prints. We were sure that a deer's tail was not long enough to drag on the ground, so we came up with some theories of what could explain the odd tracks:
- The deer dragged its foot because it was injured.
- The deer dragged its foot because the ice under the snow was so slippery.
- The deer was a baby and hadn't been in the snow, so it moved its feet very carefully and couldn't pick its feet up very high above the snow.
Mrs. Ziegelbauer also brought along some plaster to make a cast of the deer tracks. It was neat to see her pour the plaster right into the snow. We had a great trip and discovered many things!
Valentine Projects
Red, white, purple, and pink were everywhere as we began to get our room (and outside) ready for Valentine's Day. You will see the results of our outside snow project very soon, but it looks pretty interesting, right? Friday we experimented with shaving cream and swirly paint to make gorgeous marbleized hearts for our valentine mailboxes. Thankfully the hearts were spectacular because the mess was pretty spectacular too as you can see in the last photo! That reminds me that I better get busy on my cards for the Valentine's party. I hope all of you have already begun to write yours - please remember, the words will be more meaningful without treats or sweets!
Enjoy the beautiful snow this weekend,
Mrs. Jeffers

Wow! What a busy week. We heard a lot about the Nature Hike. How cool that you saw a fox den.
Nicholas loved the 100 glasses! That seemed to be the highlight of the day!
