Week of Apr. 8th

Happy Birthday, Anastasia!
We had a joyful day celebrating our last JK birthday for our friend, Anastasia!  We loved the yummy, spring cupcakes for a treat, and it is so fun that all of our friends are now 5!
Rain, Rain, and More Rain!
Our spring study got off to a soggy start this week as the weather kept us from getting outdoors.  We talked about the many signs of spring we would normally see, but with our grey skies, all we could see out the window was rain, clouds, and puddles!  So we used this to our advantage to learn more about clouds and how it rains.
 Rain Cloud Experiments
We learned about the water cycle and how the clouds are made up of water vapor.  As the vapor sticks together, it turns into droplets.  We were transfixed as we watched our clouds (paper towel) absorb the water as it dripped from our eye droppers.  It took a lof of water to finally make the water droplets begin to fall inside the jar.  We also discovered that after a while, the water absorbed all the way to the edges of the paper towel cloud, and it started to rain outside the jar too.  We explored using these materials all week and enjoyed changing the experiment to try new versions - holes in clouds, more pressure on the water, very clever scientists!  Have your child demonstrate this at home and explain his/her understanding of rain!

A Model of a Raincloud and Rain Inspired Artwork
We used lots of recycled materials to make a model of a raincloud and used foam, netting, and our favorite, bubble wrap, to represent the water vapor.  We added packing peanuts for droplets and silver snips of paper for the water crystals as there are still some crystals in the clouds at these in-between temperatures.   We also enjoyed crayons and water colors to make puddles and eye droppers with food coloring to make raindrops.  It's fun to experiment with materials that are wet and a bit messy!

A Musical Rainstorm
We noticed the noise the rain made on our classroom windows and tried to replicate the sound using common objects in our classroom - jars, markers, or the swish of a full skirt!  We added the sounds one by one to create rainstorm music - it was lovely!  I am having a bit of trouble transferring the video, but I will keep trying so that you can hear the music too!

Thanks for waiting a day for the BLOG as I was in St. Louis this weekend.  Hope you are all staying warm and dry!

We heard all about the signs of Spring this week. My goodness, once the big puddles dry up everything is going to turn so green! What great experiments you did this week. Hoping for more sunshine this week so you can take your Spring Hike. Nicholas is looking forward to it. Also, we are doing on our best with the cans. We don't have too many in our house. We will ask Nana and Papa to collect them for us.
